Step 2 - Comparing offers

You can compare various offers against what you are currently paying in two ways:

  1. This website gives you information on the different tariffs generally available - you can compare your current tariff with another retailer.
  2. You can go to price comparator services generally available on the internet.

As well as price, you should also check the following before making your choice about a market contract.

Check –

  • Terms of the contract - do you understand them all?
  • Tariff and supply charge- how do they compare with what you are currently paying?
  • Tariff variations - did the retailer explain if your price will vary during the life of the contract? Did they get your consent to these variations?
  • Termination fees or other charges- if you are on a market contract, do you have to pay a termination fee if you accept another offer or are there any other charges?
  • Discounts and benefits - if offered, do you get these paid up-front or during the contract?
  • Billing arrangements - does the contract allow you to pay your bill in a way that suits you, eg B-pay, direct debit?
  • Concessions - if you are entitled to concessions, does your contract set this out clearly?
  • Length of contract - how long is the contract, eg 12 or 24 months?
  • Moving house - does the contract set out what happens if you move house?
  • Written information - do you want an Offer Summary sent to you before you make a choice?
  • Time to consider - has the retailer given you sufficient time to consider the offer and whether or not it suits you?

Retailers are required to publish generally available market offers on their website in their Price and Product Information Statements.
