Industry Structure
The Energy Industry has several different parts
Generators
Generators produce electricity from coal and other sources such as the sun or wind
Distributors
Distributors own and manage the poles, wires and pipes that deliver electricity and gas to your home.
If you switch retailer, your distributor does not change. The quality and reliability of your supply will not change and you do not need a new meter.
There are five electricity distributors licensed to deliver electricity to consumers through their networks. Each is responsible for a geographic region of Victoria.
There are three licensed gas distributors each responsible for a geographic region of Victoria.
Energy Retailers
Energy retailers buy the electricity and gas from generators and sell it to you. Energy Retailers will have various different plans and services to meet your needs. They bill you and generally manage your relationship with the rest of electricity and gas industry on your behalf.
Electro Magnetic Fields
Allowable exposures to electro-magnetic fields in Victoria are regulated as a public health matter, rather than through electricity industry regulation.
